Becoming You: Crafting the Authentic Life you Want and Need

Overview

PLEASE NOTE: This program is currently being taught as an In Person class.

This course provides a proven, transformational methodology that guides students through the profound, exhilarating, and sometimes surprising journey of discovery of their authentic purpose, a life and career rich with opportunity, meaning, and impact. In short, “Becoming You” is designed to help its students uncover the best, most thoughtful answer to the often elusive question, “What should I do with my life?”

The “Becoming You” methodology grows out of the premise that the happiest, most fulfilling lives are those lived in one’s “Area of Transcendence,” the intersection of our most unique skills and aptitudes, our deepest and most authentic values, and the economy’s most rewarding and personally interesting spheres of opportunity. It might be said that the Area of Transcendence construct is intuitive – of course we should spend our lives doing what we’re great at and what we love, especially in those jobs that call us emotionally and intellectually. But what is less intuitive is how often smart, ambitious, and very enlightened people end up with lives and careers that are less deliberate and joyful, and more accidental and stressful, than they’d ever wanted. It doesn’t need to be that way!

Through the use of carefully designed exercises, multiple activities, videos, lectures, workshops, and a series of tests, “Becoming You” is an intense journey of excavation. Students first work to identify their specific, granular, personal values, culminating in a powerful 90-minute exercise and honing workshop immediately following. Next, the class dives deeply into each student’s unique skills, aptitudes, competencies, and traits, driving toward an accurate understanding of one’s true “value proposition,” personality, and temperament. Finally, the class offers a high-level overview of major megatrends, explores areas of industry usually left unexplored, and reveals the latest, cutting edge-research on the economy’s most in-demand jobs and skills.

The deepest work then begins as students, in small groups and individually, begin to draft their own "Area of Transcendence" analyses. The course concludes with a capstone project in which each student crafts a narrative of the next 40 years of their life, a journey bork of thoughtful design and desire, and the roadmap to it, now and in the future.
